Belize Agricultural Health Authority and
Ministry of Health Warn Consumers Not to Eat Certain Jars of Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter
Product May be Contaminated With Salmonella

Belmopan, February 21, 2007

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) advise consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella (Salmonella tennessee). The affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number "2111."  Belize is one of 70 countries where affected jars have been exported to; thus, supermarkets and retail outlets in Belize may have this product code among their stock of peanut butter. If consumers have any of this Peter Pan or Great Value brand peanut butter in their homes that have been purchased since May 2006, they should immediately discard it or return to place of purchase and report it to Public Health Officials.

Salmonella tennessee is a bacteria that causes foodborne illness. Symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.  Individuals who have recently eaten Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code “2111” and have experienced fever, diarrhoea and/or abdominal cramps should contact their doctor or health care provider immediately.  Any such illnesses should be reported to local health authorities.

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority is inspecting all Peter Pan and Great Value ConAgra peanut butter at ports of entry for products beginning with the code “2111” and any found will be returned to origin or confiscated and destroyed. The Ministry of Health is removing from supermarkets and retail outlets all Peter Pan and Great Value ConAgra peanut butter beginning with code “2111”. To date the Ministry of Health, through the Environmental Health Program, has confiscated more that 80 cases of the Peter Pan Crunchy and Creamy Peanut Butter. Regular updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
